On Saturday, September 25, students and their families participated in the Austin College Family Weekend series of programs.

Sherman Community Garden was honored to host both a morning and an afternoon gardening project, as an opportunity for students and their families to spend time together serving in the local community. Many 4 x 8 Foot plots were weeded and seeded for cool season crops and a large community bed was worked on.

Thanks to the Austin College Office of Alumni and Parent Relations, and to the Austin College Service Station for selecting us as a project site!

This week we heard a very informative presentation from Tropical John, owner of Tropical John's Gardens in Rockwall, and moderator of the Tropical John's Blog forum at Howard Garrett's DirtDoctor.com website.  In less than an hour, John covered a wide range of organic gardening techniques, starting with steps to make the conversion from traditional chemical-based methods (stop using chemicals, for example), and including great tips on soil amendments, pest management, and more.

Our thanks go out to Tropical John for making the trip from Rockwall for this presentation.

Master Gardener's presentation; Charter amended - Meeting highlights for Feb. 16, 2010

posted Feb 17, 2010 7:46 PM by Allen Shaw

At our meeting last night we were honored to welcome Master Gardener Mary Ann Kelley, who outlined some excellent tips for urban beautification projects, specifically relating to urban development projects now in the works for the downtown Sherman area.

After the presentation and a short break, members and friends gathered for a short business meeting.  Among discussion of other topics, members voted to ratify a set of amendments to the Garden charter, which will institute the election of Auxiliary Officers concurrent with Elected Officers.  An amended copy of the Charter is now available on the Charter, Bylaws, and Documents page.  These amendments also changed the election date for officers; elections are now to be held in April, with officers starting their one-year terms on June 1 after elections.

Summer Camp Tours - Meeting Highlights for June 2, 2009

posted Jun 8, 2009 7:55 AM by Allen Shaw   [ updated Aug 1, 2009 1:50 PM ]

During the formation of the Sherman Community Garden, one of the goals or objectives expressed by many present was to provide educational opportunities to children. With Washington Elementary within walking distance, we envisioned school children walking down the street to discover the joys of growing fresh produce in one's own backyard.

At this meeting, Vice Chair Richard Bayless announced plans that will soon make this vision a reality.  This summer Sherman Community Garden will host 45 or so summer camp kids as they tour the garden grounds and learn about the benefits of community gardens and local produce, see vegetables ready for harvest, and perhaps even sample something.  The tour is tentatively set for July 1st or 2nd. A work day may be scheduled during the next meeting to prepare.

Garden members Pam Chambers and David Bryan volunteered to help guide the tours.

Also at this meeting we discussed possible topics for future talks and scheduled AC student Lucas Hoops's presentation on "Gardening and the Sustainable Future" for the June 16th meeting.
